It’s been a whirlwind five days since I took delivery of my dream car, the 2024 Tesla Model Y Performance. Swapping out my old gas-guzzler for this electric powerhouse has been an eye-opening (and adrenaline-pumping) experience.
Instant Gratification Acceleration
Let’s start with the most talked-about feature: the acceleration. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever felt behind the wheel. One tap on the pedal and you’re pressed firmly into your seat, propelled forward with a smooth, silent force. It’s a grin-inducing rush that never gets old (although I may ease off a bit after the honeymoon phase!).
Tech Wonderland
The minimalist interior is surprisingly spacious, especially for a crossover. The centerpiece is the massive touchscreen that controls almost everything in the car. It takes some getting used to, but the responsiveness and the sheer amount of information available are impressive. The built-in games and streaming services have already come in handy for keeping passengers entertained on longer drives.
Supercharger Surprises
Owning an electric car comes with a learning curve, especially when it comes to charging. Tesla’s Supercharger network is undeniably convenient, but finding stations and understanding charging etiquette has been a bit of an adventure. Thankfully, the in-car navigation system helps locate Superchargers and even estimates charging times based on your destination.
A Few Nitpicks
No car is perfect, and the Model Y Performance is no exception. The ride quality is a bit stiffer than I expected, especially on rough roads. The lack of physical buttons for some essential functions (like the trunk release) takes some getting used to. And while the cargo space is decent, it’s not quite as cavernous as some traditional SUVs.
Overall, a Positive Charge
Despite the minor drawbacks, these first five days with the Model Y Performance have been fantastic. The combination of blistering speed, innovative technology, and eco-friendly driving makes it a truly unique driving experience.
