Echoes Restaurant & Katoomba 2011

It was a beautiful winter’s day today and what better way to spend the afternoon than driving up to the Blue Mountains to have lunch at one of the finest restaurants in Sydney. The wife and I have never been to Echoes, we’ve been next door at Lilianfels and if I’m honest, I didn’t think there was anything nicer than that. Tucked away next to Lilianfels is an award winning restaurant which has won the “Best Restaurant in a hotel” four years in a row and we can certainly understand why.

We found Echoes by mistake and without being disrespectful we thought we were having lunch at Darleys. When we got in our car we were under the impression that we’ll be having lunch at the restaurant which is part of Lilianfels not the one next door. The Katoomba Winter Magic Festival was on at the town centre so Echo Point was understandably quiet, Echoes only had three tables including us which is always good, for me anyway. To me it means they will have plenty of time to get my dish just right and they did. =)

Echoes is not cheap, it is certainly not an establishment where you’ll be having lunch every day. Their lunch mains range between $22-$55, I had the “Slow cooked Beef cheeks, forest mushroom, glazed shallots, horseradish mashed potatoes” which is the dish pictured above. Donna had the “Forest mushroom Risotto, duck confit, lemon mascarpone” which was perfectly suited to a day like this.

For dessert we had coffees and a Chocolate Mille-Feuille, raspberry sorbet…

Since it was a chilly 7 degrees outside, we dined inside where it was nice and warm. The ambience was nice and relaxed, the staff were very attentive and our meals arrived in a timely manner. We certainly wouldn’t hesitate to go back, probably in Spring where you should be able to dine on the balcony overlooking the beautiful mountains.
