With the photography gigs becoming more frequent and the need for correct colour reproduction on my images becoming a priority, I find myself looking for monitors that will deliver just that. I’ve recently had 10 x 8″x10″ images printed which I had edited and applied some filters on Adobe Lightroom 4, they came out over saturated nowhere near the quality of what I was seeing on the Dell U3011 at the time. I’ve read about the importance of having your monitors calibrated but I’ve made the mistake of not paying too much attention to it. Now that I’ve been printing images of my daughter as well, I now want the best quality and the most accurate colour reproductions I can possibly get. I’ve been considering purchasing the Spyder4Elite from Datacolor, I’m no expert in monitor calibration and I don’t know if these are the industry standard but I do have to start somewhere and I need it more now than ever.
Another thing that has caught my eye is the newly launched 4K monitor from Asus – the PQ321 with 3840 x 2160 display. This is a Ultra HD Monitor which features four-times the resolution of a Full HD monitor. As I mentioned above I currently own the Dell U3011 which is an IPS panel with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 which in 2010 was an amazing LCD and for $1899 you’d want it to be. I think there is still life in this Dell U3011 and I just need to spend a few extra dollars to make sure it’s calibrated properly. While the new Ultra HD monitor from Asus is worth drooling over, the prize is enough to stop you in your tracks. While there is no confirmation yet on pricing, these new monitors will be available in North America at the end of June 2013. It is rumoured to be in the vicinity of $5,000.
Unfortunately I don’t have $5k to drop on this monitor from Asus. Looks like I’m going to have to persist with the Dell u3011 in the meantime.
